Hyderabad, Nov 24 (PTI) Indian packaging industry growth will be largely driven by food consumption which is likely to touch USD 240 billion by 2013 and specific packaging application areas, a top Government official said today. According to J K Dadoo, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, as many 10 projects related to packaging industry will be taken up in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) with an investment outlay of Rs 100 crore. He said demand for different types of packaging in the consumer goods sector has been growing phenomenally and large super markets and malls have driven this growth even further. "Food consumption in India is expected to touch USD 240 billion by 2013. Innovative packaging solutions are the only way to maximise customer satisfaction in this sector." "Specific application areas are cut fruits, cut vegetables, dairy products, meat products and sweets, which are required to be put in ready-to-serve containers to enhance large-scale marketability," Dadoo said, addressing Indpack- 2011, a two-day event of packaging industry that began today. He said India's packaging industry stands at USD 23 billion and is growing at 15 per cent, which is much higher than the world average growth of 6 per cent. According to him, in India, there are about 600-700 packaging machinery manufacturers who are in the small and medium sector. Import of packaging machinery stood at around USD 125 million. India's per capita packaging consumption is less than at USD 15 against the world's average of USD 100, the official added.
